Waskaganish Protected Areas & Proposals

The Cree Communities of Eeyou Istchee along with the Cree Nation Government have taken the initiative to develop a conservation strategy to meet our goals to conserve our land as much as possible by means of creating protected areas recognized by the Quebec Government and by adopting international practices that fit our needs to achieve our dream of keeping our lands intact for future generations.

Proposed Boatswain Bay Biodiversity Reserve

The proposed Boatswain Bay biodiversity reserve is located in the southeast James Bay region, 30 km north of Waskaganish. It lies within the territory of the Baie-James Municipality, to which the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement applies, and covers an area of 108.7 km². The area is in the natural province of the Abitibi and James Bay Lowlands. It comprises habitats typical of the natural region of the James Bay Coastal Plain.

Broadback Watershed Conservation Plan

The Broadback River Conservation Area is a large scale, regional conservation project. It is an initiative between the Cree communities of Waswanipi, Nemaska, Ouje-Bougoumou, Mistissini and Waskaganish in collaboration with the Cree Regional Authority/Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee).

Proposed Upper Harricana Aquatic Reserve

The proposed Upper Harricana aquatic reserve is located between 48°46’ and 50°14’ north latitude and 77°58’ and 78°58’ west longitude. Most of the proposed aquatic reserve lies within the territory of Municipalité de Baie-James, in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region. The upstream part of the proposed aquatic reserve crosses Municipalité de Saint-Dominique-du-Rosaire and the unorganized territory of Lac-Chicobi, in Municipalité régionale de comté d’Abitibi forming part of the AbitibiTémiscamingue administrative region.

The proposed North Harricana river aquatic reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec region, between 50°11’ and 51°00’ latitude north and 79°07’ and 79°20’ longitude west. It is situated to the south of James Bay, roughly 110 km north-north-west of ville de Matagami. It lies within the territory of municipalité de Baie-James.

The proposed Ministikawatin peninsula biodiversity reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, between 51°09’ and 51°40’ latitude north and 78°59’ and 79°31’ longitude west. Proposed Missisicabi Plain Biodiversity Reserve

The proposed Missisicabi plain biodiversity reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, between 50°28’ and 50°47’ north latitude and 78°27’ and 79°55’ west longitude. It is situated some 125 km to the north-north-west of Ville de Matagami and 85 km to the south of the Cree village of Waskaganish. With the enlargement, the proposed biodiversity reserve covers an area of 760.8 km². It lies within the territory of Municipalité de Baie-James.

Proposed Muskuuchii Hills Biodiversity Reserve

The proposed Muskuuchii hills biodiversity reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, between 50°04’ and 50°27’ north latitude and 78°22’ and 78°58’ west longitude. It is situated 90 km north-north-west of Ville de Matagami and 105 km south of the Cree village of Waskaganish. With the enlargement, the proposed biodiversity reserve covers an area of 801.1 km². It lies within the territory of Municipalité de Baie-James.

Proposed Niquet Stream Biodiversity Reserve

The proposed Niquet stream biodiversity reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, between 50°04’ and 50°14’ north latitude and 78°53’ and 79°10’ west longitude. It is situated some 93 km north-west of Ville de Matagami and some 110 km south of the Cree village of Waskaganish. The proposed biodiversity reserve covers an area of 164.6 km² and lies within the territory of Municipalité de Baie-James.

Proposed Wetetnagami Lake Biodiversity Reserve

The proposed Wetetnagami lake biodiversity reserve is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue administrative region, between 48°35’ and 49°00’ north latitude and 76°11’ and 76°23’ west longitude. It is situated some 19 km north-east of Municipalité de Senneterre and some 55 km east-south-east of Municipalité de Lebel-sur-Quévillon. The proposed reserve covers an area of 234.3 km² and lies within Municipalité de Senneterre in Municipalité régionale de comté de La Vallée-de-l’Or.
