Waswanipi Protected Areas & Proposals
The Cree Communities of Eeyou Istchee along with the Cree Nation Government have taken the initiative to develop a conservation strategy to meet our goals to conserve our land as much as possible by means of creating protected areas recognized by the Quebec Government and by adopting international practices that fit our needs to achieve our dream of keeping our lands intact for future generations.
The Broadback River Conservation Area is a large scale, regional conservation project. It is an initiative between the Cree communities of Waswanipi, Nemaska, Ouje-Bougoumou, Mistissini and Waskaganish in collaboration with the Cree Regional Authority/Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee).read more
The proposed Taibi lake biodiversity reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, between 49°20’ and 49°30’ north latitude and 77°16’ and 77°44’ west longitude. It is located approximately 50 km north-west of Ville de Lebel-sur-Quévillon and approximately 30 km south of Ville de Matagami and forms part of Municipalité de Baie-James. The proposed Wetetnagami lake biodiversity reserve is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue administrative region, between 48°35’ and 49°00’ north latitude and 76°11’ and 76°23’ west longitude. It is situated some 19 km north-east of Municipalité de Senneterre and some 55 km east-south-east of Municipalité de Lebel-sur-Quévillon. The proposed reserve covers an area of 234.3 km² and lies within Municipalité de Senneterre in Municipalité régionale de comté de La Vallée-de-l’Or.read more
